There has never been such a Hamlet yet! The cast consists of nearly 100 artists, including Odin Teatret’s actors, guests from various parts of the world, and artists of Gambuh Desa Batuan Ensemble from Bali. For this piece, Eugenio Barba has been researching various Eastern and Western cultural traditions since the 1960s.

The production is based on Vita Amlethi by Saxo Grammaticus, Denmark’s first historian (1200 A.D.). The work on Ur-Hamlet started in 2003 in Holstebro, Denmark, then continued in the International School of Theatre Anthropology in Seville (2004) and Wroclaw (2005), then on Bali island, and, in its final phase, in Ravenna. The production was designed with great precision. The actors wear original costumes, which emphasize their multicultural characters, and move amidst a labyrinth of torches that lighten up more and more new spaces. The enemy, anticipated from the outside, emerges from within – the dark underground layers of an ‘orderly’ society. As the world collapses, Hamlet proclaims the rules of the New Order.
