Hamlet in Roberto Bacci’s performance lives in a world of multiplied Shakespearean characters. He is surrounded by ghosts, kings, and clones of Ophelia, Orazio, and Poloneus. The forces which push the story forward are embodied by six fencers who hide their faces behind thin, shiny masks. This disguise, along with soft fabric of the costumes, makes them creatures of both human and inhuman nature at the same time. They force Hamlet to repeat his story, already heard and played a thousand times, and ultimately drive him to his destiny. From the flesh of Hamlet floods the silence which keeps the questions on hold. It is the same silence that suppresses Hamlet’s revenge for his father’s murder. Duration: 80 minutes (no intermission)
