Born in 1960 in Antverpia (Belgium). Studied graphic art at a local Academy of Arts. Visual art plays an important part in his theatrical work. His interest in the creative use of modern technology in theatre is accompanied by his love for literature. He gained international recognition with his adaptations of world prose writings, such as Hiroshima, My Love by Marguerite Duras (1996) and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (1999). He also worked on texts by Dylan Thomas, Marcel Proust, and Jeroen Brouwers. Cassiers’ original theatre language combines modern technologies with research on the deepest audience emotions. The culminating accomplishment, a symbiosis of acting methods and technological achievements, was Proustcyclus (Proust Cycle). He worked on this production from 2002 until 2004 and was awarded the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts and the Berliner Festspiele Werkpreis Spielzeiteuropa for it. Since 2006 Guy Cassiers is the Artistic Director for the biggest theatre in Flandria, the Toneelhuis in Antverpia, where he continues to cultivate artistically and organizationally innovative ideas.
