Born in 1974 in Cegléd (Hungary). In 1995, Schilling founded one of the best Hungarian alternative theatres, Krétakör (Chalk Circle Theatre). In 2000 he graduated from the Theatre and Film Academy in Budapest. The first piece he directed, Lorca’s Blood Wedding, won the prize for best direction at the International Theatre Festival Kazincbarcika in Hungary. He then went on to create Teatro Godot, Towerwell, Baala after Brecht and Liliom by Ferenc Molnar. In 2000 he created a show Nexxt – Frau Plastic Chicken Show, presented at a festival in Avignon as a part of Theorem Project. In the piece, the director scoffs at TV programmes designed for big audiences and the image of love created by media. In 2001-2002 Krétakör staged a trilogy inspired by George Büchner’s works: W-Workers Cirrus, Leonce and Lena and Danton. “Beginning my work on Woyzeck I knew only one thing,” says Schilling in the performance’s programme. “This play would take place inside a cave. The performance was devised trough improvisations and physical exploration of the text. We did not want to reconstruct Buchner’s play but to recreate it once more.” Árpád Schilling’s performances have been presented to Polish audiences at several festivals, including Dialog in Wroclaw and Kontakt in Torun.
